U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Essar Group subsidiary Mesabi Metallics will invest $15 billion to build the largest steel mill in American history in Iowa. Set to launch production by 2030, the project will generate 1,750 permanent facility jobs alongside 350 mining roles tied to an iron ore extraction site in Minnesota. The integrated venture signals a major domestic manufacturing and raw materials expansion under current industrial reshoring efforts.
U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed plans by India-based conglomerate Essar Group to develop a massive $15 billion steel manufacturing facility in Iowa. The initiative, spearheaded by Essar subsidiary Mesabi Metallics, was formally introduced during an Oval Office briefing attended by Essar Group co-founder Ravi Ruia and Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia.
President Trump characterized the forthcoming facility as "the largest steel plant in American history," emphasizing a renewed push for domestic heavy manufacturing. According to White House administration officials, construction targets operational production by 2030.
Production Capacity & Direct Employment
- Steel Complex (Iowa): Projected to produce 10 million tonnes of steel annually, creating approximately 1,750 permanent high-skilled operational jobs within the state.
- Iron Ore Mine (Minnesota): The steel plant will draw feedstock from an associated $2.5 billion mine located in Minnesota’s historic Mesabi Iron Range. The site will generate roughly 7.5 million tonnes of iron ore per year and sustain around 350 regional jobs, marking the first new iron ore mine launched in the United States in five decades.
"This plant will use the latest technology and will compete head-to-head with any steel plant in the world on size, quality and on cost." — Rewant Ruia, Chairman, Mesabi Metallics
Senior administration officials present during the Oval Office announcement included Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Export-Import Bank Chair John Jovanovic, and Senior Director for Global Supply Chain David Copley. The project represents one of the largest foreign direct investments into U.S. basic materials and heavy industrial manufacturing in recent decades.
