Generative AI credentials are becoming a significant factor in hiring decisions across Saudi Arabia. Employers are placing greater emphasis on practical skills and verified certifications as organizations accelerate workforce transformation in line with evolving market demands.
Saudi Arabia's job market is showing a growing preference for skills-based hiring, particularly for candidates with verified generative AI expertise, according to Coursera’s Micro-Credentials Impact Report 2026.
The report found that nearly all surveyed employers in the Kingdom incorporate skills-based hiring into their recruitment process for entry-level positions, with a large majority applying the approach extensively.
Employers also indicated a strong preference for applicants who possess verified generative AI credentials. Many respondents said they would choose a candidate with proven AI skills over someone with greater experience but without such qualifications.
The findings suggest that organizations are increasingly prioritizing practical and job-ready capabilities as digital transformation continues across industries.
Interest in AI-focused micro-credentials is also rising among students. The report noted that Saudi learners are more likely than the global average to enroll in programs that include generative AI certifications.
Employers reported positive outcomes from hiring graduates with micro-credentials, including stronger first-year performance and lower training costs. Many also indicated a willingness to offer higher starting salaries to candidates who hold these qualifications.
The study further showed that accredited micro-credential programs attract significantly higher participation rates than non-accredited alternatives. A large share of graduates with these credentials were able to secure jobs related to their field of study within a year of graduation.
Business leaders interviewed in the report emphasized that recruitment decisions are increasingly driven by demonstrated skills and real-world problem-solving ability rather than academic qualifications alone.
Industry representatives noted that professional certifications can signal a commitment to continuous learning, but their value is strongest when combined with the ability to apply knowledge effectively in workplace settings.
Training and consulting organizations also highlighted a growing focus on practical learning experiences, workplace readiness, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, AI governance, cybersecurity, and enterprise AI applications.
According to experts cited in the report, demand for AI-related skills is expected to continue growing as Saudi Arabia advances its workforce development goals and broader Vision 2030 initiatives.
