The engineering talent market shows its largest supply-demand mismatch among professionals with 0–3 years of experience. While technology remains the largest destination for engineers, opportunities are spread across manufacturing, construction, automotive, electronics, energy and other sectors.
The engineering talent market is seeing a widening gap between the number of candidates available and the demand for workers, particularly among professionals at the beginning of their careers, according to a report by talent platform foundit, formerly Monster.
Engineers with 0–3 years of experience represent nearly 45% of the active engineering candidate pool, while they account for only 28% of available engineering job opportunities. The report is based on active job postings in August, with engineering vacancies collected from online platforms and candidate availability drawn from foundit’s talent database.
The August 2026 estimate shows 39.59 lakh active engineering candidates compared with 6.68 lakh jobs requiring an engineering background. This works out to around 5.9 candidates for every available job.
The candidate-to-job ratio differs considerably across engineering disciplines. Automobile and automotive engineering has about 1.1 candidates per job, while electronics and instrumentation has 11.5 candidates per job.
Candidate availability is highest among engineers at the start of their careers and becomes tighter as experience increases. The candidate-to-job ratio falls from 9.5 for professionals with 0–3 years of experience to 4.1 for those with 15 or more years of experience. Meanwhile, professionals with 4–10 years of experience account for 54% of engineering demand.
According to foundit CPTO Tarun Sharma, engineering careers are expanding beyond traditional sectors as demand grows across technology, manufacturing, infrastructure, automotive, electronics and energy. He said engineers have opportunities to apply their existing engineering foundation across emerging areas while continuing to develop their skills.
Technology remains the largest individual destination for engineering professionals, although 67% of engineering opportunities are now located outside IT/software and services/GCCs. IT/software and services/GCCs account for 33% of engineering jobs, followed by manufacturing/industrial at 15% and construction/engineering/real estate at 13%.
Electronics/semiconductors, automotive/EV and energy/power/renewables together represent another 26% of engineering opportunities.
Bengaluru accounts for the largest share of engineering opportunities among individual cities, with 19%, or 1.27 lakh jobs. Delhi-NCR represents 13%, Hyderabad 12%, Pune 10%, Chennai 9% and Mumbai 8%.
Other Tier I and Tier II cities collectively account for 29% of engineering opportunities, equivalent to 1.94 lakh jobs. These opportunities span areas including manufacturing, IT, infrastructure and industrial engineering.
