Amazon has laid off fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees mainly within its Stores unit, impacting personnel in customer service and selling partner teams across the US, India, and the UK during its Prime Big Deal Days sales event. The move follows earlier rounds that eliminated 30,000 roles, with founder Jeff Bezos stating that ongoing adjustments remain necessary after aggressive headcount expansion during the pandemic.

Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that it has implemented fresh workforce reductions, primarily targeting its Stores division, which manages the core consumer e-commerce platform.

The job cuts coincided directly with one of Amazon’s largest promotional retail events, Prime Big Deal Days, which ran across Tuesday and Wednesday.

Scale and Impacted Business Units According to a person familiar with the matter, the company eliminated fewer than 1,000 white-collar roles:

  • Affected Functions: Internal Slack communications shared by departing personnel indicated that reductions touched several operational groups within Stores, including customer service, selling partner services, and potentially other corporate units.

  • Geographic Scope: Employees receiving termination notices were based across locations in the United States, India, and the United Kingdom.

  • Corporate Stance: An Amazon spokesperson stated via email, "We've adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities."

Context and Post-Pandemic Headcount Sizing The latest layoffs represent an ongoing sequence of smaller trims following a substantial restructuring wave of 30,000 job reductions that began last year and extended into January.

Addressing the continued workforce reductions in a Fox News interview broadcast Wednesday, Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos attributed ongoing adjustments to pandemic-era hiring surges:

"People were staying home and they were ordering, and it was an incredible, stressful period for us, by the way... The whole team worked extremely hard and did so much, but we really grew our head count."
