As organisations expand their use of AI, forward deployed engineers are emerging as a sought-after talent group. Their ability to work closely with clients, build customised AI solutions and guide adoption efforts is making them increasingly valuable across industries.

Demand for AI-Focused Engineering Talent Grows

A growing number of companies in Singapore are hiring forward deployed engineers (FDEs), a role focused on helping organisations implement customised artificial intelligence solutions.

According to recruitment firm Randstad Singapore, active job listings for FDE positions on local job portals exceeded 400 in 2025, up significantly from around 80 listings the previous year.

Competitive Salaries

Randstad Singapore country director David Blasco said mid-career forward deployed engineers can earn annual salaries of at least $120,000.

For comparison, traditional business analysts typically start at around $80,000 annually, while software engineers begin at approximately $90,000.

Companies are offering varying compensation levels. Databricks has advertised FDE roles with monthly salaries starting from $20,700, while Singtel has listed positions beginning at $5,000 per month.

Working Closely With Clients

Forward deployed engineers usually work directly with organisations such as banks, hospitals, factories and ports to develop AI systems tailored to specific operational needs.

The role often requires understanding a customer's business processes, technology environment, operational requirements and compliance obligations before designing and deploying solutions.

Google forward deployed engineer Yap Wei Yih said the work involves close collaboration with customers' internal engineering teams. Beyond technical development, the role also includes helping organisations understand and adopt AI technologies aimed at improving productivity, reducing costs or creating new revenue opportunities.

Projects can range from several weeks to several months depending on complexity.

Real-World AI Applications

OpenAI forward deployed engineer Sharan Thangavel, who previously worked at Palantir, described the role as requiring continuous learning and strong interpersonal skills.

One project he worked on involved building an AI-powered conversational interface for a sports content platform, allowing users to ask questions and receive personalised recommendations.

Yap has also worked on initiatives including AI safety guardrails for financial products and AI-driven customer service systems.

Growing Importance as AI Adoption Expands

Industry experts expect demand for forward deployed engineers to increase as AI systems become more capable and businesses integrate them into a wider range of operations.

Google Cloud regional managing director for solutions and technology Mitesh Agarwal said future responsibilities are likely to include overseeing networks of AI agents and ensuring they operate securely, efficiently and in coordination with one another.
